Well. I didn't QUITE say "shouldn't". It's more I don't think it's useful to most under most circumstances and MAY even be working against you. It's been known to cause weight gain and/or make weight loss harder. It's also been accused of causing cellulite.
I think the ONLY reason you wouldn't have been getting as much response from spearmint is if taking a tea, you aren't taking enough and you aren't brewing it correctly...
Many "spearmint" teas out there are mixed, with an unknown quantity of spearmint, and they tell you to steep it for only 3 minutes in "hot" water... The spearmint tea in the nation of origin is made with LOTS of spearmint, KEPT AT A BOIL for 10 minutes, then allowed to cool before drinking.
I take spearmint in capsules and have actually discontinued saw palmetto and I'm not even a genetic woman. The spearmint is doing more than the sp ever did.
However, all my reasons for encouraging spearmint and discouraging sp aside, getting sick from sp is a first for me. Never heard that one before.
Though I suppose it's possible you were somehow managing to get your androgens DANGEROUSLY low. IIRC all three of those are anti-androgenic in some way? I believe pygeum and sp work in a similar fashion, but I admit not knowing so much about pumpkin seed.
