Hey, I just wondered if anyone else had bad side effects with saw palmetto?

I used it a few months ago for a week and had EXTREMELY severe headaches, like I thought I had meningitis it was that bad, the headaches stopped as soon as I stopped taking it.
I tried it again the last two weeks and was having really good progress in the nbe area and it also started to clear my skin a bit, but the headaches were back Sad

It was a complex of sawpalmetto, pumpkin seed oil and africanum pygeum so it may have been one of the others but the sp had the highest quantity.

I was making some good progress but the headaches are just scary, does anyone know of another anti-androgen as strong as saw palmetto?
According to Abi85 ( one of the most experienced on this forum) Saw Palmetto should´t be taken by women.
She recommends Spearmint.
Spearmint tea has antiandrogenic properties.

It might conflict with the other 2 you are taking with as i did with the fish/omega/flax oil together.

BTW, when I took SP (6 pills per day) it helped slowing down the hair growth on my legs (less shaving per week) and my upper lip hair. Once I stopped and switched to Spearmint tea (3 cups), it did not help to such. I think SP does a better job than the Spearmint tea.

Well. I didn't QUITE say "shouldn't". It's more I don't think it's useful to most under most circumstances and MAY even be working against you. It's been known to cause weight gain and/or make weight loss harder. It's also been accused of causing cellulite.

I think the ONLY reason you wouldn't have been getting as much response from spearmint is if taking a tea, you aren't taking enough and you aren't brewing it correctly...

Many "spearmint" teas out there are mixed, with an unknown quantity of spearmint, and they tell you to steep it for only 3 minutes in "hot" water... The spearmint tea in the nation of origin is made with LOTS of spearmint, KEPT AT A BOIL for 10 minutes, then allowed to cool before drinking.

I take spearmint in capsules and have actually discontinued saw palmetto and I'm not even a genetic woman. The spearmint is doing more than the sp ever did.

However, all my reasons for encouraging spearmint and discouraging sp aside, getting sick from sp is a first for me. Never heard that one before.

Though I suppose it's possible you were somehow managing to get your androgens DANGEROUSLY low. IIRC all three of those are anti-androgenic in some way? I believe pygeum and sp work in a similar fashion, but I admit not knowing so much about pumpkin seed.

I was reading up on stronger anti-androgens and I found one called Reshi. It's the strongest plant derived anti-androgen. The same study said the SP extract had the same effects reducing testosterone as placebo. If the extract barely had any effect, imagine just normal whole SP. I think there are better alternatives, like Reshi, white-peony. I attached the article if anyone is interested.
Hm. I wonder if it has something to do with your SP being mixed with the other ingredients and other parts of your routine. Not that I am saying that you should try it again, but I think most of us just took the actual SP and not mixed with other ingredients. Herbs are so interesting to learn about.
Good luck.
