Grapefruit Juice warning for NBE

#1

Most of us have heard of the warning about grapefruit and drug interactions such as cholesterol lowering meds, ect, but a goof on my part just brought it to my attention that it goes much deeper than that. About 2 months ago I began drinking a large glass of grapefruit juice each morning to help kick start my metabolism which was beginning to lag. It works great for that, so I was pleased with the results But, in the last two months I have slowly began having little signs that my hormones are trying to get a little out of hand. This month was worse than last.

I pulled out my old faithful copy of what your doctor may not tell you about premenopause and last night stumbled on something that shocked me. It said to not drink grapefruit juice because it will cause a build up of estrogen and other hormones in the body, if you are taking anything that contains hormones. It seems that it contains an enzyme that stops the liver from being able to expell the estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, testosterone and many other hormones so that they begin to build in the system.

I have been doing research this morning and found many sites discussing grapefuit juice and hormone imbalances also, but thought I would just warn everyone that those doing nbe should stay away from it. It's hard enough keeping outselves balanced while doing this, sure don't need to sabatoge ourselves with a simple glass of juice!

Thanks for the info. My diabetic suplier sent out some info. to me on things not to eat. Graprfruit was on the top of the don't eat section. They tell me that for diabetics. It is worse than eating sugar.

I don't know about you, but I think it's a shame since I love a nice cold glass of ruby red!

PS, Andy I've been meaning to suggest for you to do some research on Banaba tea, yes it's spelled the way I wrote it. It is used in Japan to control diabetes and it cleans and heals the kidneys so it's a doulbe bonus for diabetics. I've used it on and off for years now for kidney stones. it disolves them so I don't have to pass them any longer. Thank goodness.

Anyway, it's pretty cheap. I get it for about 1.60 for 20 tea bags on ebay from an overseas herbal store. they combine shipping and it's cheap. you can drink as a cup of hot tea, or you can make it like a pitcher of ice tea and just drink it cold with whatever you want to add to it. I also drop in a single regular tea bag with it and you can't tell the difference then.

(SIGH) there is many things ,that I enjoyed eating. I do not eat anymore. I know my limits of self control. The urge to eat too much of the things I should not eat are too great. So I don't buy them anymore.

Interesting, that might explain a lot. I grew up adoring grapefruit and when they were in season I would eat one daily.

Is there a maximum amount of grapefruit one can take before seeing those side effects? I just remember I still have a bunch.

Thanks Mel
I'll certainly look into it. Right now I have a problem with my kidneys. Protien is exscaping my kideys into my urine. I have a appoinment with a specialist in april for an counslutation. Gotta have a lot of tests done. I don't let myself think too much about it. It is sometiing fixbable, livabale, or something else. So any suggestions are welcome.
Anyway, Yes, Kiney stones HURT. Angry I have passed a few.
As we know from NBE. There is a lot of stuff out there. Said to do this and that. So I am always happy to hear of first hand personal testomonials on products.

Happy journey and best wishesWink

That's very interesting Mel. I came across this just recently and was actually meaning to post it here. But I just knew that it builds up estrogen. Didn't know about the other hormones and was actually wondering about that.

The other info that I was meaning to post along with it was that St. John's Wort appears to do the opposite. It increases the break down rate of some hormones and other substances. This is the reason why there are warnings to take it in conjunction with bcp.

My thought was that if you do it the right way you might be able to use those two things in your favor for example for cycling. St. John's Wort might also be great for a cleanse.

Good that you posted this.

Diamerina, I think that any amount has this effect on the liver processing of certain things. I read about even one single grapefruit a day doing it. My husband was told when he was put on cholesterol medicine that he couldn't have it period. sigh.
