Bumpy fingernails and yellow gunk under the tips

#1

Well this post is for myself for something that didn't used to bother me but it has spread now. Basically 7/10 of my fingernails are bumpy(lots of little dents) and under those nails at the tip is some yellowish gunky powder that I find myself constantly cleaning off. Lastly at the base of these nails the skin is slightly swollen.

I haven't been able to find anything googling so I thought I might ask here.

OUCH!

There's lots of things this COULD be, and NONE of them are good! Get yourself to a specialist ASAP. Most of the possibilities are endocrine related, so try to get to an endo.

At the very least bring it up with your GP and try to get referred to someone who stands a better chance of figuring it out!

Trust me, some of the things that can cause this are LIFE THREATENING. So get it taken care of, and fast!

Granted... most of them are not life threatening and are very easily treated with OTC supplements... but... how big of a risk are you willing to take if it's one of the REALLY bad things?

My qualifications for telling you to get it checked out? I'm studying to be a cosmetologist. Nails like yours are classified as "do not touch and refer to a physician", meaning, I couldn't give you a manicure or pedicure. I'd be legally REQUIRED as your cosmetologist to send you to a physician. The book doesn't go into too much detail but does say a little about some of the conditions that your nails could be caused by... and some of them are definitely nothing to toy with.

Ok I will do that, but I have to wait till I get a new job. It was on 3-4 nails for 4-5 year of what I can remember before it spread more.

Sounds like a fungal nail infection at the very least. But yes get it seen to before it gets worse. Good luck!

Fungus is what I thought at first, too. There seems to be a new product out there called "fungi-nails." It works topically and on individual nails as opposed to the old oral medications that affected all you nails and nail beds. You may want to look into that.

And that is something you can try right now... If this turns out to be what's wrong, great! If not... Definitely get to a physician ASAP.

Honestly... It doesn't QUITE sound like a fungal infection to me, but it still could be.

Have you smelled them? Often when things are infected there is a smell or some sort. The nail bed is inflamed so that could be due to the over stressed lymphocytes in the area. The denting is the quizzical bit and doesn't sound right at all.

Psoriosis of the nail can have these types of symptoms however.

I just found this which is useful:

Psoriasis could actually fit it very well, and is actually the least problematic of the possible causes... though it'll also be the most long-term. Generally once developed, it's life-long.

IMO, for what it's worth? Since apparently a doctor is not presently possible, go with the most likely fit of what we know right now with the easiest OTC remedy, which is psoriasis. So. Moisturize your hands OFTEN. Try to avoid directly touching any drying agents. And try out some of the other recommendations on the site Babs linked for psoriasis remedies. Obviously the dandruff shampoos etc don't help, lol, but I think you know how to use proper judgement on what suggestions will help!

And... in a way I sure do hope this is what's going on! It's probably going to remain a life-long problem the remainder of your life... but... if this is the problem, at least it's not something life threatening and/or hormonal!
