A lot of it is actually tapping some of the larger potential of our minds and has nothing to do with (external) spirits at all. It DOES have to do with spirituality though - the practitioners own spirit, which is VERY closely tied in with the brain. But there's a lot that does have to do with spirits external to the practitioner themselves. I'm not saying spiritual stuff isn't real. But it's not "magic" at all. It's just an extremely complex science we don't fully understand.
It's also far far far more dangerous than most seem to think. The forces you're dealing with are far more powerful than most people think, including the power of their very own mind.
In fact... if you're very careful and truly know what you're doing you could harness those forces to do basically anything.
Which is why it's so dangerous. Because almost no one really truly knows what they're doing and people who start to get close tend to get too cocky with it and do something foolish.
Here here. When I was sixteen I came up with a theory about science's relationship to "magic". At this time I had limited experience (beyond the normal spectrum) with either subject at the time. I just knew the typical explanation of of both was missing something.
My conclusion is that they are two sides of the same coin for all the reasons you've mentioned above. Great quote btw =) I do feel there is a difference though between real scienc(e/tists) and mainstream "science". The fields general unwillingness to deem certain subjects socially acceptable to investigate is highly unscientific and will not lead to actually understanding any of the spiritual aspects of this world.
How funny, I was thinking about your mind can do anything comment, looked up from my phone and I see my bf's Biology of Transcendence: a Blueprint of the Human Spirit". Have you ever looked into the topic, you seem like the ideal candidate =)
Side note: after reading Tibetan's experiences I'm interested in her opinion on this as well
