Hi Waxingmoon, I was wondering what would your opinion be on my vitex discussion in the ''how long are you supposed to use vitex''. Summary - I started taking vitex recently, mostly for excess androgens but I was kinda hoping it will fix whatever imbalance I have, as I don't know what my hormonal state really is because I got on the pill 2 years after I got my period and have been on since. Now I learnt that vitex can only do its job if you're not on BCP and couldn't decide whether to go off it or not. I tried going off a few years ago and the hormonal blow was quite terrible. Before BCP my cycle was very messsed up, gyn wanted to do tests but I just wanted to get on the pill. I've been more of less ok on the pill for 8 years. Do you think vitex may have better chances of fixing me than the pill?

Hi Moon,
You know I think it is worth the shot. The pill has not fixed you, rather has kept you from noticing whatever imbalance you naturally have had. 8 years on the pill is long enough and I worry if continued use would be wise for you considering things like the potential of stroke.

I think that beginning vitex, even before you stop the pill might just give you enough time for vitex to become potent before the pill effect wore off and you were back to bad symptoms again. Many women have touted the positive benefits of vitex on their cycles.

I would give it at least 3 - 6 months before I gave up on it. You may or may not get immediate relief, but I bet you would eventually. What also might occur is that you would have some estrogen receptor activation which could bring on greater NBE results.

It is definitely worth the attempt in my opinion.

Best wishes,

I've heard that vitex is used to easen the hormonal blow of going off BCP. I've been taking it for 1 month already while on BCP and have thoguht of stopping now on my second cycle. I thoguht I noticed a slight case of that transitional hormonal blow in this one month - my period was slightly more painful than usual and I've been a bit PMSy for just a couple of days. My skin was great in this month, except when I got my period I got like 5 zits. Otherwise my zits were never really time of the cycle dependant. Should I maybe wait one more cycle on BCP to give vitex more time to start working?
