Fennel

Do capsules contain exactly the same type of ground herb (Fennel) that is used in cooking?
If I buy ground fennel from, say a spice shop (or it's sold VERY cheaply on ebay and measure out the amount i want, is it the same thing as buying way more expensive capsules?

Not necessarily. Herbs for medicinal use are often prepared more carefully to obtain a greater purity.

I'm using ground fennel and am getting on well with it. Previously I had taken capsules.
I'm thinking of trying the fennel seed itself, because I have a coffee grinder that works perfectly with herbs and spices.
