It does seem like the protein powder that caused it! I'm sorry I can't say much to help but I do know when I opened my Optimum Nutrition protein powder (very popular brand among) the white inner seal lifted off with the cap when I unscrewed it... I phoned the supplements store and they informed me that's common, and it's still safe.
