How to prepare raw fenugreek and fennel seeds?

#1

I've had the seeds packets for some time now and I really want to try them out but I'm not sure how, when, how much etc. I've read on here that herbs can mess up your cycle and mine is already kind of erratic so I don't want to risk disturbing it even further. I don't want to take unnecessary risks with my period but calculated ones are more than welcome. I also have no idea if I should take whatever I make with the seeds (I suppose it should be tea?) orally or topically. I'm a fan of topical treatments seeing how well my breasts respond to massaging them with flaxseed oil so I'd love to do that but if oral intake is more effective then I'll definitely opt for that instead. Should I combine them with anything else, like any other herbs? How and where am I supposed to keep them? How long and how much should I use them? Should I use all I have on hand or save the excess for later? Anything else I should know about fenugreek and fennel seeds?

How much water should I put them in, does it have to be hot or cold? Should I keep them cold in the fridge or somewhere dark or does it not matter how I store them? Do I grind the seeds beforehand or keep them whole? I'm in my follicular phase right now so I'll try it these days.

By the way, the recipe on the packet says to make an infusion with 3 teaspoons of ground seeds with 600ml boiling water and then to filter the water and drink 200ml 3 times a day OR to mix 1 tablespoon of ground seeds in 250ml water and to boil for 10 minutes until it turns mushy then to spread it on gauze and to put it on the (sick) spot. Fenugreek is good for the skin too so I assume that's what the second recipe is specifically meant for but still, what do you think about the first?

Yeah it’s good for breast growth and it is an ancient tradition to eat them. There are so many videos on YouTube for different recipes but for me, what I do is:

Either hot or warm whatever you want: soak 1 tablespoon with 1 cup of water for the whole day . Do it at like 9am or earlier and drink it at 7pm at night. You can also do the recipe on the back that’s fine also . You should drink the seeds also with the water for better absorption but it’s disgusting , it taste terrible. I actually had to train myself to get used to the taste lol .

Definitely cycle your herbs and foods according to your phase . This continually cleanses your breast receptors and keeps them sensitive for each hormone. If you take something hormonal everyday the receptors get desensitized.

I started taking fenugreek the day after you replied here, I was at the end of my follicular phase though so I only did it for 6 days, now I'm waiting for my next period so I can take it again. It's too little time to get any noticeable results but it was pretty good actually, at first it tasted kind of bitter (reminded me of green hazelnuts) but I got used to it fast, now I'm a fan! C:
Do you have any herb recommendations for the luteal phase too? I've read on here it's best to tone down estrogen rich foods during the luteal but what about phytoestrogenic, antiandrogenic and any other beneficial foods and herbs?

I have heard that you can make tea out of a small amount of seeds. I am not sure how this compares with the soaking method. Just another idea to keep in mind. Maybe this would make it easier to drink the water, and you would eat the seeds after.

Please be careful ….. after a few months now I have a lump in my right breast I don’t know what the heck is going on and I’m really scared .. I don’t want to go to the doctor … I am stopping all forms of hormones for this cycle and I will just massage with my hands. I want to see if this lump will go away . If estrogen is too high it can cause breast or endometrial cancer so please don’t blindly just increase estrogen like I did. See if you are deficient in it . Maybe all you need to grow is progesterone . This is all confusing but I’m taking a month off to get my body back in order .. after a month I’ll update and tell you what’s going on with my body .

Thank you love . Yes , I did search on google and found out a bunch of non cancerous lumps could also be the cause. Even cysts. Once I start my period I will update if it is gone or got smaller .

When looking at purchasing fenugreek, I became frustrated by the vague descriptions on what is what. Some fenugreek capsules appear to be just ground up seeds, some capsules are labeled 'extract'. Hardly anything I can find lists percentage saponins or anything else useful, despite most advice I see to mandate > 50% saponins. How would anyone know if it isn't on the label? I became interested on focusing on raw seeds or processing them into something where I knew what I was getting, or at least what I was starting with. In my research I came across this article that discusses deriving extract from fenugreek seeds, and actually lists the percentage saponins (amongst other compounds) that they were able to obtain:

https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.10...022024/pdf

The authors discuss microwave assisted extraction, which I am going to ignore since I don't have a lab at home. As far as I can tell this type of extraction is lauded for its ability to hold a solution at a given temperature with high through-put. I don't care much about through-put, mostly I care about doing things safely on a budget at home. Since I am able to replicate holding a solution of grain alcohol around 70degC with ground fenugreek in it for a few minutes - that's what I did.

In the study their results indicate that: "The optimal conditions of parameters obtained at 2.84 min irradiation time, microwave oven power 572.50 W, ethanol concentration 63.68% and 0.09 g/mL feed-to-solvent ratio. Based on the suggested optimum conditions the obtained responses of TSC and TPC were 195.89 ± 1.07 (mg DE/g d.w), 81.85 ± 0.61 (mg GAE/g d.w), respectively, (n=3)"

I interpret these findings as the extract containing 196mg of saponins per g (1000mg) of ground fenugreek. I think this is a pretty solid return given fenugreek seeds are only a few bucks for a couple hundred grams.

For my home setup, I used 100mL of 45% abv vodka, with 10g of ground fenugreek. I started with whole seeds and thoroughly ran them through a spice grinder. I put it on the stove at about 65degC for about 5 minutes, checking with a thermometer the whole time. I took the solution and actually had to add back some water as much of the alcohol evaporated off in the process and it was starting to turn into a bit of a paste and was too thick to strain. I first tried filtering with a paper coffee filter, but the solution was too thick (or the particles of fenugreek too fine) that this didn't work. I resorted to using a tea diffuser, which worked well. This resulted in a cloudy yellow liquid that certainly smelled of fenugreek. They weren't lying about saponin content either, as it is slick to the touch and does resemble soap on your fingertips.

I truly have no idea what the concentration of the resulting tincture is. However, I can safely (I hope) presume that it can only be below what the authors derived under optimal conditions. Maybe I have half of the total saponin content they were able to achieve? Who can say.

Think this stuff is safe to mix into my tea? Considering a "safe" dose is around 600mg fenugreek @ 50% saponins, 300mg total saponin would be the goal for a daily dose I guess. However, there is a difference in absorption between a liquid extract and a capsule as well, so I am thinking this stuff is probably pretty potent. What next? Does someone want to check my math?
