So I've been basically measuring myself, and last time I did I got 28 in. for my bust. I looked in a mirror and made sure the tape was strictly level to the floor. But when I lamented this to friends, they insisted I did something wrong, because nobody has a 28 in. bust, and if I did it wasn't a bad thing. (it is in fact a bad thing, I have to wear XS shirts and they're actually getting bigger, when I'm staying the same! And nobody has a 28 inch bust!)

Of course they all suggested going to a tailor or a bra-fitter, but I have no money or time (or even a reason, really) for that. The only store I know of that even does bra fittings is Victoria's Secret, and I've heard some horrible things about the fitters actually telling you to get the wrong size because your size isn't available (that, and I have asthma and can't walk into VS).

Was I really measuring myself wrong, and should I just go to a tailor? Are they pretty much going to tell me the same thing I already know?
Hi, did you measure your underbust too ? The size is determined by both.
From my reading, when measuring bust, at the nipple, you must hold the band a bit lose, not to 'cut' the breast, and when measuring underbust you must hold it very tight.

I was measuring for shirts, not bras, but when I measured my under-bust was 26 in.
Okay, then this is ok, two inches difference between bust and underbust is a normal ratio. You just have a very tight ribcage !

Though that's why they keep insisting I must have done something wrong.
Then measure once again ? I've read some girls on here finding 27" underbust, that's just an inch difference ...
You are wrong. plenty of women have 28 inch busts, plenty of women have smaller busts than that. to suggest otherwise is insulting to those that have them. try to be more respectful.

I really wasn't trying to be disrespectful, I'm one of those with a 28 inch bust after all, but I don't know anyone else with one. And the friends I lamented this too certainly don't either, and my results seem to be why they're insisting I did it wrong. It was a failed attempt at sarcasm.
if you are just trying to find out how many inches you are, measuring around the fullest part of the bust is the only way to do it, usually the fullest part is right around the nipples.

every thing counts, so if you use an online bra calculator to find your size. if your put in say. 28" but you actually measure 28.25, the measurements may be different.

i used to work at a maternity store, i had to do bra fittings as part of my job. not all bras are equal you could have a whole selection of bras in front of you, all in "your" size. and two 3rds of them may not fit because of the cut, and style, and you would have to go up or down a size.

as for the actual measurement of your bust. maybe you shouldn't tell your friends, they don't sound very nice, or supportive. there is nothing wrong with starting out with a small bust.

when first started BCP i was about 29 3/4 " and i counted that extra quarter inch as a blessing Smile. i slowly grew to 32.5 inches, and although BCP isn't NBE the growth was slow and only by keeping written track of my growth did i notice any real changes. and with noogleberry this past month i have gained another .5 inch putting me at 33". every little bit counts, every quarter inch counts. growth may be slow but if you track your progress month to month, or every few months write it down, over time, you'll see there is growth that you didn't notice in the flesh.

measure yourself around the bust and the underbust and the over bust. write it down ( the over bust measurement may end up being the same as the underbust) and keep updating it. don't look for the big leaps, like inches. looking at it in quarter inches and half inches will feel better and will show your progress more accurately.

i hope that some of this helps.
