Full Version: I barely fill a B but I'm supposed to wear a DD?

First off, just want to say that I think the folks on this site are wonderful, and I look forward to any input you have for me.

I watched the video linked in the thread "Stop What You're Doing..." and decided to follow her instructions to measure myself properly. I did everything she said, step by step, TWICE, and came up with the result that I should be wearing a 30DD.

My bras are all 34B, which according to the video actually fit me perfectly. I barely fill the cups (no 'quad boob'), the band is parallel to the floor all the way around, the front middle (gorge?) fits flat against my ribcage, and it's on the loosest clasp. I also put it on using the 'scooping' method, which to be honest doesn't make any difference as there's not much to scoop.

I'm having a hard time understanding why if my current 34B fits the way a properly fitting bra should fit, how it's possible that I am really a 30 DD since I don't even totally fill a B cup.

I am posting some pics so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks in advance.
Cup size corresponds to band size
34B->32C->30D all have the same volume on smaller bands. 30DD is only one cup bigger. If the bra is old it can disguise the fit issues
I think it looks loose on the back for you! I find if I wear a looser band, my boobs sometimes slip under it a little and the cups feel emptier...maybe that's the ticket? Try one and see!
Except 34B isn't fitting you properly; you can see in the side picture that the band is not parallel all the way around. It rides up in the back. You shouldn't be able to pull the band very far away from your skin at all.
Yes that isn't how a bra should fit the band needs to be tight for support also if its loose on the band you can push breast tissue towards the sides of your body or armpits.
Its good you put a pic up as everyone said this is a very bad fit 30dd should be good even if you don't fill the b because when the band is tight you get all the breast tissue onto the cup so your breasts will appear bigger which doesn't happen with a loose band.
If you have a 30dd could you compare I think it would be useful for everyone wearing the wrong size.
Welcome to the forum! If that's a 34B it doesn't look like it fits well.... Id try a 32C and see how that fits.... Maybe a 30D... a 30DD might be too large...
I'm a bit confused. The band doesn't go up in the back; maybe it seems like it does a bit because I have my arm raised over my head? The band isn't loose at all - I can't pull it away from my back at all (the way she does in the bra fitting video demo of a bad fit). I'll try to take a shot with my arm down to see if that makes a difference in how it looks.

I'm totally willing to give a 30D/30DD a try (except that I don't remember ever seeing that size in a store, so I don't know if I can actually find one to try on, maybe I'll have better luck finding a 32C) but somehow the principle of the sizing method still doesn't make sense...shouldn't a D cup be larger than a B cup, regardless of the band size? The explanation that a 34B = 30D is causing some cognitive dissonance.

Thanks for the feedback!

Think of it this way:
34 band and 36 bust measurement equals 34B
30 band and 34 bust measurement equals 30D
The ratio of band to bust is bigger on the 30D but the 34B has a bigger bust measurement.

The idea of a sister size is that the two volumes equal each other. So a 30D would be able to fit into 34B because it's the same cup volume on a smaller band.

There are fit issues with sister sizing as you can see because the 34B is made for someone with overall bigger measurements.
Thanks - this explanation does make a bit more sense to me.

I think what I'm really stuck on is that I'm thinking of cup size as being independent of band size. In my mind, my breasts are more 'longer and thinner' vs. 'smaller and rounder' so even if there is a bigger ratio to my band size, ultimately the volume of them isn't what I'd consider big enough to fit a D cup.

In all of these measuring guides/videos/explanations, I never see breast shape really taken into consideration when sizing. Doesn't the shape ultimately make a huge difference?
