Hi
What do you ladies use to get your omega 3 intake? What kind do you think is the best one?

I use to use flaxseed oil, but hated this, very slimy and oily to swallow.

I then changed to milled flaxseed, which I sprinkled on my breakfast and yoghurt at dinner, but didn't like it. I took it for quite a while, but had to give up, I just didn't enjoy my food.

I've looked online and found they do Flaxseed Oil in capsule form. They also do Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil capsules. But which is the best? And are the capsules just as good as the oil and milled flaxseed? How much mg per day should you take to get the best/most out of it?

Thank you so much ladies

Fish oil is the best source of bio-available omega 3 (epa & dha as opposed to ala, which is in flax). I get the one from myprotein - it has the highest levels of epa & dha that I could find. It seems to be free of vitamins, minerals and heavy metals and it says you can take 1-3 capsules a day so I take 3.
The World Health Organization recommends 1500 mg omega 3s. Ya it should be from seafood. If you eat a lot of plant fat then more omega 3s may be better.
Thank you Surferjoe for the recommendation guidelines, I will now ensure I get that amount.

Thank you also isobasic. I will now look into Fish Oil. I have found one which is high in EPA & DHA, but please may I ask what is ALA? I've not heard that before, is this a 'bad' thing to consume?
What kind of good things can I get out of the Omega 3? Im a heterosexual man. Just curious.

Alpha Linolenic Acid isn't 'bad' at all, it just has to go through quite a lot of processes in the body before it becomes useful - and you need a lot of it to get a reasonable amount of the useful stuff in your system.
Plant-based omega 3's are ALA, which as isobasic and others mentioned, does not translate well into something useful for the body. It's not a bad thing to have, as a backup, but to get meaningful amounts of useful omega 3's from ALA you'd have to consume insane amounts of ALA that'd add up to thousands of calories from just ALA alone, not counting the food you're getting it in.

Fish fats are ideal. Salmon is the best fish fat.

If you can't easily stomach a good salmon a couple times a week, then using a fish oil is a good option. And Cod oil is the best for that.

Be very very careful who you get your fish oil from. A lot of disreputable brands out there.

If you aren't terribly eager to do your own brand research I'd encourage you to link what you find here so I can tell you if it's reputable or not.

Or if you tell me what country you're in I can perhaps tell you where to buy one that's reputable for you.
Thanks isobasic & AbiDrew - that is very useful information to know, thank you so much.

AbiDrew - I've already bought my fish oil, I've got these ones - http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=146&prodid=421 - so I hope they're okay. Holland & Barrett are a well known company in the UK so hopefully they should be.

Not sure if I'll buy from here again, it's just that when I bought them there was an offer on for "buy one bottle and get another one for 1p". So when I run out I will just find the best deal, so yes please, if you could give me some reputable brands I would be most grateful. I live in the UK.

I look forward to your comments on them.

Many thanks

Hmmm... Not finding a whole lot about what that's a rebrand of. It will be a rebrand, and it looks suspiciously like Solgar. Solgar is highly disreputable for fish oils.

Honestly Solgar is not very reputable for anything.

Holland & Barrett is a UK retailer is it not? Not really necessarily known for making their own stuff... Just like in the US they rebrand stuff.

OMG, yeah. They're ALL Solgar rebrands, just found their cod liver oil supplements and those numbers smack of Solgar through and through.

They don't carry a single reputable brand...

OMG, I don't really want to take them now.

Also, I'm not going to buy anything from them again because all their products are Solgar.

You say "and those numbers smack of Solgar through and through" - which numbers are those? How can you tell? What do I look for so I can check myself for future buying from retailers.

Thank you also for the reputable link - much appreciated.
