Anyone take Astaxanthin?

#1

I found out that astaxanthin is a carotenoid from shrimp, lobster, crabs and apparently it's a really good anti-androgen. Many women say they actually stopped shaving after taking it! And some sources say that it could increase breast size in men.

Has anyone tried it? It seems fairly safe but would love to know about your experiences/opinions.

Thank you, Hannah. That's incredible! May I ask you how long you've been taking it? Do you think one could take it for long periods?
I actually did read that it makes your skin turn a flattering, pinkish shade (hopefully not orange??  Big Grin )

I like astaxanthin, it's stronger antioxidant than CoQ10, just don't take it with saw palmetto or you might be lowering estrogen. Btw, most carentoids inhibit 5 alpha reductase...(as well), red pigmented fruits and vegetables inhibit 5 alpha reductase.

Maybe 8-12 mg is too much, the study demostrated (in vitro) .3 mg was to inhibit DHT @ 99% (type II most likely). I found in further studies that astaxanthin inhibits DHT while promoting T. In other words, an ideal scenario for pro-aromatase (increased estrogen), though incombination with a pro-aromatase. So, maybe 2mg -4mg would be a good starting dose.

J Herb Pharmacother. 2005;5(1):17-26.
Abstract
Inhibition of 5alpha-reductase has been reported to decrease the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and possibly inhibit or help treat prostate cancer. Saw Palmetto berry lipid extract (SPLE) is reported to inhibit 5alpha-reductase and decrease the clinical symptoms of BPH. Epidemiologic studies report that carotenoids such as lycopene may inhibit prostate cancer. In this investigation the effect of the carotenoid astaxanthin, and SPLE were examined for their effect on 5alpha-reductase inhibition as well as the growth of prostatic carcinoma cells in vitro. These studies support patent #6,277,417 B1. The results show astaxanthin demonstrated 98% inhibition of 5alpha-reductase at 300 microg/mL in vitro. Alphastat, the combination of astaxanthin and SPLE, showed a 20% greater inhibition of 5alpha-reductase than SPLE alone n vitro. A nine day treatment of prostatic carcinoma cells with astaxanthin in vitro produced a 24% decrease in growth at 0.1 mcg/mL and a 38% decrease at 0.01 mcg/mL. SPLE showed a 34% decrease at 0.1 mcg/mL.
CONCLUSIONS: Low levels of carotenoid astaxanthin inhibit 5alpha-reductase and decrease the growth of human prostatic cancer cells in vitro. Astaxanthin added to SPLE shows greater inhibition of 5alpha-reductase than SPLE alone in vitro.

Thanks Lotus, all new to me..

It explains what I experienced, I really need White peony lol...I'll have to look how many mgs there is in my Astaxanthin but if I took 1 capsule daily as recomended it was too much for me in long term.....I noticed my breasts deflated, and too much weird enough made me tired. But a little bit improved my mood gave me an orange glow lol, but in a good way like I had a tan..and slowed hairgrowth(I took one in 3 days or less) I used it every week though. Boobwise I think you can do well on it, but not too much, maybe not even the recomended dose:p

Thank you for all the info, Lotus! What will happen if I don't take an aromatase?? Will axtaxanthin just end up raising testosterone? Do you think it's ok if I just take something that increases estrogen (like flaxseeds or aguaje) together with it?

Hannah, did your breast deflate because you didn't take an aromatase or because you took saw palmetto with it? Yes, I hear white peony is one of the best aromatase.

I didnt took Saw Palmetto with it...I never tried SP..I read you could get cellulite from it and some other things...also that it lowers estrogen I thought so no SP for me. But I think my breasts deflate bc my theory kinda was that I kept on lowering my dht and then my body wanted to fill up that dht again with testosteron so I not only lowered my dht but also my normal testosteren(?) then nothing remains for natural aromatase into estrogen and maybe if the two act like parameters in some kinda way low T could mean low E....but this is al guessing. One thing is for sure if I took the recommended dose on my bottle from Royal Green I got low in energy together with deflated breasts....the low energy was for me always the warning that It had been too much which was after 3 days. But a little made me feel better...so less is really more often..

Thanks Hannah. That's actually also why I don't want to take SP. They say it is an anti-androgen but I also found out that it lowers estrogen so no thank you!
Wow, I never imagined that lowering DHT could be bad....I thought blocking it completely would be great for NBE. This never crossed my mind! I know some testosterone is essential but I thought DHT was completely evil for us ladies?? lol Interesting.....
You're right. I do agree that less is more esp. when it comes to certain herbs/supplements.
